Both air pollution and soil pollution are associated with gas service stations. During gas station operation, unburned fuel can be released to the environment through distribution, delivery, and storage. Majority-black neighborhoods are 44 percent more likely to be located near gas stations, in particular. In order to improve regulations on distances between service stations, the effects of sales volume and the number of gas stations clustered together on the risk of cancer due to fuel spills and evaporative fuel losses should be examined.
Gas stations pose a risk to the environment and public health, and disproportionately harm minority and low-income populations, posing a direct threat to the environmental justice movement.
